Through A Glass, Bent, 2014

A challenge from the UB Department of Art, participants use seemingly obsolete art and technology objects to create new works of art, to be displayed in an exhibition entitled "Cradle to Grave II: Re-Appropriation, Obsolescence, and the Arts."

Participants chose one or more items from a collection of objects assembled by the Art Department staff.  Each participant then created a work of art for the exhibition that incorporates at least one of these items. Some examples of items available include: computers, keyboards, 35 mm slides, USB and power cords, televisions, VHS tapes, projectors, video camcorders.

For my piece, I chose an HP 1210 All-In-One scanner, printer, copier. I disassembled the scanner, and rebuilt it at the bottom of an aquarium, just below the glass. In the process, the LEDs of the scanning mechanism now produce a series of intensely colored lines rather than white light. The circles in the images are bubbles from beer, which was poured into the tank and scanned.

The exhibition opens on September 25th with a reception from 5:00-7:00 PM and continues through October 18, 2014.
