From the Editor: VOL. 3, NO.5 MAY/JUNE 2003
The Photovision staff has just returned from a successful trip to Las Vegas where we spent three days at the annual PMAI show. The trip was successful because we didnt lose any money. In fact, editorial assistant, Deana Fisher, won $200.00 in a progressive slot competition (for a $20.00 investment), and contributing writer, Donna Conrad, won $2.40 for a .25¢ investment. Thats what I call a successful trip to Vegas.
In this issue we feature the large format work of Howard Bond. Howard shares with us not only his excellent photography, but reminisces about his life and experiences. Howards work is followed by photographer Jo Whaley, whose work I discovered while visiting the Photo-eye Gallery in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Jo is also working in large-format, only on the opposite end of the scale. While Howard goes out, into nature and man-made structures to find his inspiration, Jo goes inward, into a world of her own creation. Howard works in black-and-white, Jo works in color.
The third portfolio in this edition is that of Perry Dilbeck. Perry has been documenting the vanishing life of truck farmers in his home state of Georgia. Many of his images utilize the Holga camera to create a mood and aura not possible with most cameras.
Robert Hirsch has provided a unique series of interviews with four independent book publishers that will give you insights into the world of the small photography press. In his regular column, he reviews Susan Sontags latest book, Regarding the Pain of Others, a particularly timely book in light of recent world events.
We also have a series of darkroom articles which will help you to control print quality. One on sharp masking and one on dye dodging, both to control local contrast. In addition, Stephen C. Peterson discusses the technique of overall print bleaching in Tools & Techniques. Not to be overlooked is part 5 of Makos great series on testing and calibrating your film.
Incidentally, our web guy, Michael Bosworth, just added a readers forum to our web page, www.photovisionmagazine.com. Take a look. I hope to hear from you.
