Cracked and broken, the stone floors of the Albright-Knox Art Gallery produce tones within the large interior spaces that have become a part of the experience of visiting the gallery.
Recording the sounds of the loose stones, I have created a small collection of audio files that can be used as text message alerts. The piece, Transference, disconnects the sounds from a visit to the Albright-Knox and allows for new contextualization as they are assigned to phone contacts and incoming messages. After developing new associations to the tones, revisiting the gallery and stumbling upon an unexpected note from a loose stone will ellicit feelings not connected to the normal experience of the space.
