Autologous
For the show Vascular Modes, Hallwalls Curator John Massier asked a few artists to create a new piece of work that responded to the recently built Gates Vascular Institute nearby.

"At the same time, Hallwalls has always been about the present moment, about current artistic impulses, and about the creation of new works. To this end, 21 Buffalo artists have accepted the invitation to participate in an exhibition of new work whose point of departure is the recently completed Gates Vascular Institute in Buffalo's downtown medical corridor, developed by Cannon Design and lead architect Mehrdad Yazdani. Artists working in a diverse array of media have been invited to participate—drawing, painting, photography, filmmaking, and sculpture." — Hallwalls.org

My piece, titles Autologous, is comprised of two light boxes through with red fluid is pumped alternately from one box to another. Just before the show began, revaluations had sufficed about Lance Armstrong's blood-doping. For his team Armstrong allegedly managed the highly systematic removal of the teams blood during training, storage, and replacement during races. In cycling, the amount of red blood cells in an athlete's body directly effects performance. Although illegal in competition it is a fascinating practice and an extreme example of the integration of technology with biology. While there is not question of the the use of biometrics to regulate training, recovery and sleep in athletes, management of bodily fluids appears to be beyond the pale.
